2016 Iditarod Volunteering

A friend of mine volunteers with the Iditarod every year. This year she brought me on board to help with the sled dog races:

Spent a couple hours loading the musher's food/supply drop with Stacey, her husband Jansen, and their friend Lucy.  Alaska Dispatch News did a nice little article on what we did.  Local TV news station bit here.  Official Iditarod photos from the day are here.

The Warehouse: Mushers drop off piles of supply bags, we weigh them and sort by drop-off location

Wrapped pallets of Musher's supplies ready to be flown out to different checkpoints

Volunteered at communications headquarters from 12 to 6 AM.  I received emails from the different checkpoints with musher in and out times, which I repeated to the person next to me who was entering them into the computer program that updated the online musher standings.  It was quite fun, nice to do a job that isn't so stressful.  The highlight was the woman I was working with.  She grew up in Boston but had been living the last number of years in Wellington, New Zealand working as a director for the department of creatures at Weta Workshop!  She was involved in the last two Planet of the Apes movies and helped out with the last two Hobbit movies.  She totally downplayed her job there, as I imagine all jobs start to feel like jobs.  But still, it was really cool working with someone who works at Weta Workshop!

Volunteered at communications headquarters from 12 to 6 AM again, this time Mat accompanied me.  Mat received phone calls from the check points, I got a turn at entering stats into the computer program that publishes online.  Jansen was there all night so it was fun to talk with him.  Another good night of a non-stressful job!  Can't wait to do more next year!
