We woke up and hit the road by 9:00AM. We stopped in Girdwood for gas and donuts. Josh and Soleil we ahead of us to stake out a campsite. They told us Crystal creek campground was full and were going to check out Crescent Creek campground when our cellphone lost reception. We drove by Granite Creek campground just past Turnagain pass, found a good campsite, and paid for 2 nights just in case Josh & Soleil found everything filled up. We left our water container on the picnic table and made our way on to Kenai. We got reception again at Summit Lake and found out they secured a sweet spot right on the creek in Crescent Creek campground. We turned around again, back to Granite Creek Campground to grab our water jug, then started back to the Kenai AGAIN! We finally found Josh & Soleil at Crescent Creek campground, set up dad's tent, then took off for the float.

Putting in at Cooper Landing
Floating down the Kenai
We put in at Cooper Landing, Soleil and I dropping off the truck at Jim's Landing. We started our float around 3:30 PM, Dad, Mat, and Josh on the NRS raft and Soleil and I on the little Shredder. It was a nice and cool overcast day, not much wind. We rounded a couple bends before stopping on a gravel bar mid river. Soleil and I had to paddle fast across a swift current to get to the boys, Josh eventually throwing us a tow line to bring us in. We fished on that bar for a while but we weren't seeing any fish swim by so we loaded back up and floated further down river.

Nice rooster tail!
Decent weather
We found ourselves a nice little back eddy where we saw them jumping. We pulled out here and set up for some fishing. We were actually getting hits this time! After a couple of hits that got off, dad gets a hit and is able to play it in! He catches the first sockeye salmon we've seen caught with a rod! Not much longer after that, Soleil catches one as well! It is very exciting to finally catch one of these buggers on a rod! But the sun keeps moving down and we have a lot of river to float still so we loaded up and moved on. We stopped a few more places that did or did not have fish jumping, getting hits only where the fish jumped. Didn't land any more and it was getting to be past 9:00PM so we saddled up and floated the rest of the way to Jim's landing, arriving at 10:30PM. We filleted our two salmon and headed back to camp, arriving after dark. BBQing up some dinner and sharing stories across the campfire when the rain started, driving us away from the fire and into our tents, high off our first success.
