With a list of items and groceries to pick up, we headed to Kmart first thing in the morning. After getting the items we needed and about a week's worth of food, we headed back to the hotel to plan our Kauai vacation. We grabbed all our maps, guide books, and the calendar and sat in the little courtyard. The Garden Island Inn is a very cute little hotel, colorfully painted by a wonderful local artist. Not fancy but the grounds are filled with tropical flowers and very clean. The walkway in the back has a little water feature. The staff are super friendly and they have a whole wall of stuff to borrow: beach towels & mats, sunscreen, books, snorkeling gear & boogie boards. They stock delicious coffee in each room and provide fresh homemade juice each morning in the office. At night all the string lights are turned on to continue the sweet atmosphere of the place.

We spent a couple hours deciding what beaches, hikes, and items of interest we wanted to do the most. We wanted to hike the Kalalua Trail but all the campgrounds were closed for improvements so only day hikes were allowed. So we looked for other hikes to do. We reserved our state campgrounds online, then went to the county offices to reserve some county campgrounds (county campgrounds can only be reserved in person or by mail). After getting all the logistics out of the way, we spent the afternoon lounging and swimming at Kalapaki beach, watching the tugboats push a large cruise ship out of the small harbor. Costco pizza for dinner was a nice, cheap choice.
