It rained again last night. Josh and Soleil had to get back into town to pick up their friends from the airport. They offered us the rafts to continue using but dad wasn't interested in rafting without our personal raft guides! It was rainier today so we packed up our stuff as well and headed out. We took the Skilak lake detour, stopping at the different launch points so dad could figure out which one he took when he visited for hunting back in 1982. We determined it was the mid-lake launch. We continued south, looking to check out Homer. The rain was torrential driving south but as soon as we came upon the bluff overlooking Katchemak bay, the clouds raised so that one could see the mountains on the other side, no rain to be seen.

Visiting Skilak lake

We nabbed ourselves a hard and well-used campsite at the Homer Spit campground. All the scenic sites were already full but it was easy access to the beach and nice clean bathrooms, and only $25! We set up camp then walked into the tourist fray on the spit. Mat started checking out prices of halibut charters... I knew he was looking for that, he kept pushing to visit Homer instead of checking out Seward and the Kenai Fjords NP. Dad wasn't really interested in halibut fishing and Mat was too nervous about getting seasick again so we decided against it and got some halibut fish and chips instead. We checked out a few of the shops, mostly the high end native arts one; they had cool specimens on their wall like a seal skin dog harness and a caribou hide sleeping bag. I bought a wooden ornament that is a pacific NW indian designed salmon and some earrings made of mammoth tusk.

Summer day at the beach in Alaska
Homer, AK
We walked down the beach back to our campground where we grabbed our chairs and brought them out to the rocky beach to watch. There were lots of otters going back and forth, hundreds of seagulls diving to catch little tasty items. A mink whale came in close and blew a couple times. We watched the boats come and go. Dad got to experience summer on an Alaskan beach: cold and windy! But the mountains and glaciers were out and beautiful to look at. Mat couldn't take it anymore and grabbed his casting rod. He set up a salmon lure but kept on catching Bullheads! Eventually dad retired to bed, Mat and I stayed up until it started getting dark around 11:00PM.
