We finished the workweek yesterday morning, we slept all day yesterday to stay up all night getting ready for the first leg of our flight: 8AM flight to Seattle. The northern lights were going wild but we didn't have the time to really enjoy them. We dropped Barley off at Jenn's house yesterday night due to the early departure of our flight. 5AM rolled around and we took off for Matt & Krista's house where we would leave our car and call a cab to the airport, lights still strobing in the clear cold, crisp sky.

On the drive in, I got a text from my mom. Apparently, the King of Thailand died today. He had been in poor health for a number of months but he ruled the kingdom of Thailand for 70 years, highly revered and seen as a unifying force for the country. The government declared one year of mourning; people wear black and no merrymaking. A lot of bars, restaurants, and entertainment will not be open. Whatever happens, it will change our plans. If things are too shut down, we may just stay in Cambodia and maybe check out Laos. We shall see.

The desk attendant at the check-in desk gave us a little fright saying we needed a visa on our passport but after checking a bit longer it was deemed OK and we were given our plane tickets. It was a full flight and, since we couldn't check in early, we were both given center seats in different rows. It was a bumpy ride but we made good time to Seattle. We found our Delta Airlines flight to Shanghai and boarded quickly. However, there was a small leak in the front cabin and we spent an hour grounded until it was cleared by maintenance.

We lucked out big time for this flight though! We had a whole 3-seat row to ourselves! So lovely to stretch out the legs and lay horizontally! On top of that, we had an awesome flight attendant, Andrew, who obviously uses this job to travel for leisure around the world. He took good care of us, giving us extra wine and telling us about Thailand.
