June 11, 2019 - Pre-op appointment with the surgeon

Had my follow-up/pre-op appointment with Dr. Hagen today. For the surgery, she said I’ll be put to sleep and paralyzed, my leg put into traction for no more than an hour to create about an inch’s worth of space in my hip joint, and then three small incisions to allow the tools to enter so they can file down part of my pelvis at the hip socket and part of my femur before reattaching the labrum. They fitted me for the hip brace and crutches I will be using for 2-3 weeks after the surgery. She said, since the operation is on my right hip, I won’t be able to drive for probably four weeks. I’ve been assigned to physical therapy for 12 weeks, which I can start the day after surgery. She said I should be able to go back to my physically active job of ER nurse after two months but I think I’ll wait until the physical therapy is done. She encouraged me to ride the trainer the same week as surgery (as long as there is no resistance and the bike is set up so I don’t flex my hip more than 80 degrees). She expects it’ll be a good six months before I can do more vigorous activity such as skiing or hiking 10+ miles.
